The tone control is very useful, able to be tonally flat or dark and resonant on one side or bright and bubbly on the other. The mix allows for 100% wet or dry signal. Its preamp section let a lot of low frequencies through but then it would encounter an output section (power tubes, output transformer, and speaker) that couldn’t handle all that low end, often resulting in a flubby response, especially if you turned the Volume up. In fact, if you look at the manual from an old 50s tweed, it advises you to “turn down the Volume should you experience any distortion”. Of course, a lot of guitarists ignored that advice and cranked it up anyway, much to Leo’s chagrin, and the sound of rock was born. The Formula No. 55 gives you that huge low-end response but was specifically voiced for touch-sensitive dynamics and a fat, but tight and punchy sound. You can play a palm-muted boogie-woogie rhythm pattern, for example, and if you don’t bear down too hard with your picking attack you’ll get a big chunky, woody sound, the kind of sound that you’d think would flub out if you suddenly started strumming harder. But start thrashing away and the response will get tighter instead of flubbing out! You just have to try it for yourself to see!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Formula No. 55 is a Foundation Overdrive that reproduces, in exacting detail, the preamp section of the classic Fender™ tweed 5E3 Deluxe using an all-discrete JFET-based signal path. You can play chugging, palm-muted riffs that you wouldn’t be able to get away with on a standard fuzz pedal. For best tone and response, only attenuate when you’ve got the Gain and Body knobs really cranking and need to reduce the output some.\u003cbr\u003e• The GAIN control increases the gain for more fuzz, harmonics, and uppermidrange frequency boost. It is voiced to be usable throughout its range from minimum all the way to maximum.\u003cbr\u003e• The BODY control increases the bass response as well as making the octave more prominent. Like the Gain knob, it also increases output and harmonic content. Technically, it is a negative-feedback loop with variable frequency response. But let’s not dwell on technicals.... this is another MOAR knob!\u003cbr\u003eTo get the best feel for what this knob does, set it at minimum and then slowly bring it up as you thump the low E string on your guitar. You’ll hear (and feel!) the low end thump increase as you turn up the Body.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDescription:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Octapussy is essentially, an octave-up fuzz in the tradition of the Octavia. But it’s not a clone of that circuit! Nope, it’s an original circuit utilizing 3 silicon transistors and two diodes that takes the tradition to the next level! The preamp section is custom voiced to give you an extremely dynamic playing response. You’ll get those famous high-octave lead tones up high on the guitar neck but you’ll also get an amazing array of fuzz tones anywhere else on the neck - just by how you play it and how your GUITAR’s volume, tone, and pickup selector is set.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe more you play the Octapussy, the more sounds you’ll find in it! The reverb sonically stays out of the way of the dry path due to the minimal initial reflections and a full warm reverb that tapers smoothly fades out into a tail. In the studio, plate reverbs were routinely employed due to the way they added a natural ambience without interfering with the original program material… That and the fact that even though they were nearly 7 feet long and 4 feet tall, plate reverb units were a heck of a lot smaller than a giant room or hall when ambience was needed on recordings.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ePlate reverb units were used on just about every instrument including vocals. As on the original unit, cranking this knob up can cause clipping on the wet side due to the signal crashing the springs.
