The reason being that they naturally sit in the mix. Why? Because of the fan fret system. It’s all about the great fundamental tone it produces.

• Equalized tension from string to string
• Strong fundament tones without bad harmonics or overtones
• No more floppy B string

If you look in a grand piano you’ll see that the low strings are longer and the high strings are shorter. This produces the right tension and proper length for each of the notes to ring true. Now look at the Dingwall fan fret bass. Notice how the lowest, thickest strings are longer and the higher thinner strings are shorter, just like a grand piano. This string length produces the clarity and definition Dingwall is known for.

“We’re happy to report that the Combustion is well deserving of the Dingwall reputation. It’s built to last, with plenty of bounce, vibrancy and great sustain, all you would want from a five-string bass. We can’t recommend it highly enough – this is why so many bassists are adopting these instruments into their bass arsenals. It’s compact and lightweight, making for a bass that’s comfortable to wear and beautifully balanced. The Gloss Combustion finishes are a polyester base topped with polyurethane color and top coats. This industry standard finish is long-wearing and beautiful for years of service life.

NECK

The five-piece maple neck is securely attached via four bolts, and the fingerboard employs Ralph Novak’s fanned-fret system and a 34–37-inch scale spread (the scale length of the B-string is three inches longer than the G), with a 240mm fretboard radius, making it super fast over a full two octaves.

Dingwall takes neck construction very seriously due to their extensive experience in guitar repairs coupled with their geographic location and corresponding extreme climate. They’ve experimented with many different lamination and have found a 5-piece maple construction to be among the best. In their years in the guitar repair business they constantly had to deal with humidity related problems made worse by the huge temperature and humidity swings of their local climate. Many of these problems could have been minimized through simple design changes and materials choices.

Neck Carve: Medium thin C shape
Neck Reinforcement: Heavy duty truss-rod
Headstock design: Flat, string retaining bar. Lee Sklar turned them onto the benefits of small frets. Dingwall collaborated with Hipshot to modify their Ultra-lite tuners, which resulted in a shorter tuning peg that allows proper downward angle at the nut for maximum sustain and improved stability.

“The string spacing works well, while the multi-scale layout feels quite natural after a few playing sessions. Take it from Lee Sklar: fanned-frets work just fine! Hipshot open-gear machine heads keep the headstock weight down. Extra touches include a recessed jack socket and the easily removed magnetic plate covering the battery cavity. Tuning stability is equally impressive across the whole instrument.”

SPECS

Made in China/Canada (Hybrid Manufacturing)
Body: Swamp Ash with Quilt Maple top
Neck: 5-piece maple bolt-on
Fingerboard: Maple, 24 ‘banjo-sized’ frets, 9.45-inch radius
Scale Length: 34-37 inches (5-string)
Pickups: Dingwall FD3n, Neodymium Magnets
Preamp: EMG B30EQ
Controls: Master volume, 4-Position Quad-Tone pickup selector, 3-Band Active EQ (Bass, Middle, Treble), Active/Passive Toggle Switch
Bridge: Dingwall ‘Minimalist’ one-piece bridge
String Spacing at the Bridge: 18mm (5-string)

Quad-Tone Pickup Selector
Position 1: Bridge
Position 2: Bridge & Middle (MM-style)
Position 3: Bridge & Neck (J-style)
Position 4: Neck

Tuners: Licensed Hipshot Ultralite
Nut: Graphtech Black Tusq
Case: Dingwall Padded Gigbag

MJ

https://motorcityguitar.com/products/dingwall-combustion-3x-5-string-multi-scale-bass-3-pickup-quilt-top-whalepoolburst-w-maple-fretboard
