But it sounds great into almost anything! If you have always had trouble using Fuzzfaces live, this one is MUCH easier to use and you can hear it well with a band.

Analog Man's first new pedal of 2010 is the ASTRO TONE fuzz. This pedal is based on the 1960's SAM ASH FUZZZ BOXX and ASTROTONE FUZZ made in New York City in 1966-68 by the Astro Amp company. It was one of the best fuzz pedals.

The Analog Man ASTRO TONE is not quite the same as the old pedals. AnalogMan took their first prototype, made to 100% original specs, to play with his power trio. At the shop he compared it to an original and the sound was exactly the same. But he did not like it, he could not hear it well with the band, it was not thick enough. The problem with the original design was that there was very little low end, the sound was quite thin. You REALLY had to crank up the volume on it to get a good sound. But this would make the ON sound too much louder than the OFF sound for live use. And the tone knob was really limited in the useful range. So Analogman took the circuit and with some modern software analyzed it and found out how they could retain the low end, and make the tone control somewhat more useful. But they made sure that they could still get the EXACT sounds of the original pedal if that was desired. By turning the tone knob up higher, you can still get the original sounds which are good into a large, cranked amp. But they made it so that it now sounds awesome even into a little amp like a Fender Deluxe Reverb, at near unity gain on the pedal.

AnalogMan found several hundred original Astrotone transistors about ten years ago, and have been saving them. Many even have the same 1966 date codes on them as the original pedals! You can see "641" in the picture which means the 41st week of 1966. They are little plastic, flat, pill shaped Fairchild transistors. They have gold plated leads - they were made back in the days when gold was cheap and transistors were expensive! These transistors are pretty consistent, and usually well behaved, but they had to discard some that were too noisy for a fuzz pedal. AnalogMan should be able to make hundreds of these pedals with these original, excellent transistors. When they run out, they will no longer make a pedal called the ASTRO TONE.

Many people have problems using a Fuzz Face type pedal, like our Sunface, live with a band. Analogman had the same problem which is one reason they are making these pedals, it’s something they need to get the sounds they want. AnalogMan plays Fender amps with a Les Paul, which is not too favorable to fuzz face pedals. But this pedal works great with that setup.

The sound is not as compressed as a Fuzz Face, not SUPER thick and saturated, something between a fuzz and distortion. It’s fuzzier into a smaller amp (Fender Deluxe), and more of a BOOSTER into a large distorted amp (Marshall 1970s Super Lead). It can also be stacked with other pedals, for example running a fuzz face into it can get a sound like Spirit in the Sky, which buzzes and cuts out. Or run the Astro Tone into an OD pedal like a TS808 or KoT to make it fatter.
["Brand_AnalogMan","Type_Fuzz Pedals
"option1":"Default Title","option2":null,"option3":null
[45056147406
["Default Title
["//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2015/7205/products/AM__Astro_Tone_Fuzz_02.jpg?v=1571577054","//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2015/7205/products/AM__Astro_Tone_Fuzz_01.jpg?v=1571577079","//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2015/7205/products/AM__Astro_Tone_Fuzz_03.jpg?v=1571577079","//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2015/7205/products/AM__Astro_Tone_Fuzz_04.jpg?v=1571577080
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2015/7205/products/AM__Astro_Tone_Fuzz_02.jpg?v=1571577054
Title
Specifications:

• True Bypass switching
• Super Bright LED for lower power use, buffed so as not to blind you!
• Uses less than 1 mA of power when off, only 3 when on, so an Alkaline battery will last a few hundred hours of normal playing time.
• Three simple knobs - Volume, Fuzz, and Tone.
• High quality, hand wired RE’AN input and output jacks.
• In and Out jacks on top for best pedalboard real estate management
• Normal Boss style power jack, on the right side, negative ground so no polarity problems original 1966 Fairchild Silicon transistors, not affected by heat like a Germanium fuzz.
• Sound is not as compressed as a fuzzface, not SUPER thick and saturated, something between a fuzz and distortion but closer to a fuzz.

Description:

The Analog Man ASTRO TONE fuzz is somewhere between a fuzz and distortion, it acts differently into different amps. This pedal uses a normal power jack, but polarity inside is reversed, so you cannot share power with another pedal)
• Positive ground power. If you share a power supply with a normal pedal (negative ground), you will destroy the power supply. This means you can't use a daisy chain or a power supply with only one output. The PedalPower2 has all isolated outputs so that one would be safe.
• Battery should be a cheap non-alkaline general purpose battery, as found in dollar stores. These sound better than an alkaline in this pedal, and even a cheap battery will last years since there is no LED.
• For best sound, this effect should not have any buffers or non-true bypass effects between it and the guitar. But you can try other pedals before it for various effects.
• Volume Knob (on the left) needs no explanation. Should be able to get nice and loud to kick up your amp.
• Fuzz knob (on the right): Best to keep it up almost all the way up for craziest sounds. Turn it down for more normal fuzzface tones.
• BUZZ knob: the knob in the center of the pedal. This allows controlling the sound of the fuzz from weak to hard edged fuzz. You can turn it down to get a warmer looser fuzz sound which can sometimes be useful. Turning it up gets louder and harder, good for Neil Young sounds. You may find you need to turn it down a bit (CCW) at higher temperatures, and up (CW) at lower temperatures. For standard fuzzface tones turn the BUZZ knob down a bit along with the FUZZ knob.
• DOES NOT really clean up when you back down your guitar like the AnalogMan Sunface fuzz. But turning the guitar down some makes it cut better by removing some sustain and low end, makes it a little more jangly if that makes any sense. For example I will play some chords with the volume up high, then back it off a bit for some lead licks.
• There is a trimpot inside the pedal that allows it to work at various temperatures, and for different sounds. It is a blue square thing with a white center with a screwdriver slot. Use a tiny screwdriver to gently turn the white center part. Set it by plugging a guitar straight into the pedal, and turning fuzz and vol knobs up all the way. Then set the BUZZ knob depending on what sounds you want. For normal fuzz sounds, turn the BUZZ knob all the way down. For more buzzy, gated sounds, like a Sitar, turn the BUZZ knob to about 12:00. Turn the trimpot fully CCW (counter clockwise) and the sound should stop (gated). Then without playing the guitar, turn the trimpot clockwise to find the spot where the ambient noise from the guitar starts to come through. This setting changes depending on temperature and buzz knob setting. Try various trimpot settings to get different sounds.
• For Sitar like sounds, turn the fuzz knob up all the way then back the guitar down until the sustain dies (usually a few numbers on a standard strat type guitar). BUZZ knob setting will depend on trimpot setting.
• Optional ON/OFF fuzz pot: turning the FUZZ knob all the way down will click and disconnect the battery. This is useful if you run in a tight pedalboard where there is no room to pull out the input cable to disconnect the battery when you are done playing.

Description:

The PEPPERMINT FUZZ is similar to a fuzzface in architecture but has specific tweeks to make it more flexible and sound much crazier.

There were some nasty, buzzy fuzz pedals made in the mid 1960s. Some best examples are the Mosrite Fuzzrite, Maestro Fuzz Tone, Jordan Bosstone, Kay fuzz, etc. AnalogMan found some super high gain germanium transistors in late 2006 that could be tuned to get those sounds so they are finally able to offer a few hundred of these pedals, which they named the PEPPERMINT FUZZ in tribute to the song INCENSE AND PEPPERMINTS which features this very sound. It can also be used for some later punk rock sounds like the Stooges, etc. It can also do a decent late 60s Fuzzface sound if dialed in properly, and can get very close to the oldest 2 knob TONE BENDER pedals (MK-I and MK-II).

All Peppermint fuzz pedals have always been hand made in the USA.

They made the BIAS resistor adjustable on the BIAS knob in the center of the pedal, as there are some great sounds to be had by running higher bias than normal. It gets brighter and cuts through better when it's overbiased. Some people like the bias lower for a deeper but softer sound. There is also a blue MASTER BIAS trimpot inside to set the center setting of the BIAS knob. They set it at 5V at the shop and normally you should not need to use that. In addition, they added the CLEAN trimpot like their Sun Face, as it helps preset the pedal for cleaner, or less bassy tones that some people like, especially with hotter pickups. These clean up with a nice crunchy sound when you turn the guitar or the clean trimpot down. They recently changed a resistor value slightly to make them a bit louder. Some people, especially with humbuckers, were complaining that the normal MK1.5 was not loud enough for them, so this should help. These are known as MK-III and MK-IV versions, also known as "thin case" Tone-Benders. The grey one (MK-III) was made in 1973 and can be seen on some live pictures with Jimmy Page. Some RotoSound and Park fuzz pedals also used this circuit. AnalogMan owns three original versions of these pedals which they studied to make theirs. The rare yellow MK-IV model was sent to us from a customer in Germany who LOVED the sound but wanted a smaller, more reliable clone that was made and sounded EXACTLY the same. That led AnalogMan to the R & D which they used to make their production pedal after they made his custom exact clone.

These fuzz pedals use 3 germanium transistors and have a TONE knob unlike the earlier MKI, MK1.5, and MK-II versions. The tone knob goes from a bassy tone to a trebly tone, it's sort of a "mix" knob in the way it works, it does not just cut highs or lows. AnalogMan finds it best to keep the tone knob low, around 9:00 - don't think you need to keep knobs at noon, use your ears rather than eyes when setting knobs.

The transistors used in the old ones are unmarked so they pulled them out and tested them to find the specifications. Then they checked their stash and found some NOS Mullard germanium transistors which they had been saving for many years that were similar. They made about 100 of these pedals with these NOS transistors before they started to get low on the transistors. After that, they made a version with two NOS Russian transistors, which they found closest to the originals in sound and even looks, and one of the old Mullards. The Russians sound about the same in the MKIV, as they are not critical in that part of the circuit. These first two transistors are in a "Darlington Pair" configuration which gives them very high gain.

AanalogMan gets asked about the differences between this and their MKI.5 Sun Bender a lot.

The MK1.5 is more raw and 1960s sounding, with a BIAS knob, and gets nice cleaner sounds too. The MKIV is more saturated and 1970s sounding, and has a tone control that can go from thick to thin and trebly.

Features:

• Top Jacks for tight pedalboards
• Battery power only, battery may last a year of normal use (120 hours of use).
• Volume increased over the original, for a nice loud fuzz sound that will cut through.
• Tone knob is reversed to "normal", down for bass, up for treble.
• Bias trimpot, does not need to be adjusted.
• SIZE : 2-5/16" x 4-5/16", MXR size 1290/1590B enclosure.
• Buffers before the MK-IV do not hurt the tone much, makes it brighter and tighter. Clean up is not like a germanium Sun Face so that does not get changed much with a buffer. No problem with buffers after."}

Like all their handmade pedals, the Sunface has true bypass, so when off they do not alter your sound at all.

AnalogMan Options:

• RCA germanium LOW GAIN transistors
• Add LED: Red
• Power Options: Power Jack
• Sunface Options: Sundial knob $25
["Brand_AnalogMan","Type_Fuzz Pedals
"option1":"Default Title","option2":null,"option3":null
[30906030850114
Analog Man Sun Face Fuzz Pedal w/RCA Germanium Low Gain Transisters, Red LED, Power Jack & Sundial Knob
Default Title
["//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2015/7205/products/AM_Sunface_RCA_LG_L_PJ_SD_02.jpg?v=1571579629","//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2015/7205/products/AM_Sunface_RCA_LG_L_PJ_SD_01.jpg?v=1571578757","//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2015/7205/products/AM_Sunface_RCA_LG_L_PJ_SD_03.jpg?v=1571578757","//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2015/7205/products/AM_Sunface_RCA_LG_L_PJ_SD_04.jpg?v=1571578757
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2015/7205/products/AM_Sunface_RCA_LG_L_PJ_SD_02.jpg?v=1571579629
Title
Sun Face Fuzz

Analog Man Sun Face pedals cover all of the Fuzz Face versions plus more, handmade to your specs with more options than any other fuzz pedal.

AnalogMan is now making these in their own cases, as the Analog Man Sun Face. At 11:00 there is about a 10dB boost, which sounds twice as loud. At 12:00 there is a 13dB boost, and up all the way is about an 18dB boost which is nearly twice as loud as it was at 11:00.

Right side is the SUN FACE:

• VOL Knob needs no explanation. Audio taper volume pot.
• FUZZ knob : Best to keep it up or almost up all the way, and use the VOLUME knob on your guitar or the TRIMMER knob to control the amount of fuzz.
• TRIMMER : The white knob on the circuit board (TRIM103). You can turn this one with your fingers. Normal setting is full CCW, for full full fuzz availability. This knob works the same as the VOLUME control on your guitar, which interactively cleans up the fuzz sound. So if you never use the FULL fuzz sound, use this knob as a preset for the maximum amount of fuzz that you need, instead of having to turn down your guitar every time you step on the fuzz. When this knob is turned all the way up (CCW) it is completely out of the circuit, as if it were not even there. Then the circuit is identical to an original 1968 germanium Fuzz Face.
• SUN knob: This is the knob in the center of the pedal’s SUN FACE, also called the Sun Dial. It is set by us to the “sweet spot” for the fuzz, just under 5 volts on the High transistor at about 70 degrees temperature. It is set with the mark at 12:00 on the SUN knob. You may try other settings, you can turn it down to get a stuttering, weak fuzz sound which can sometimes be useful. Or turn it up for a harder, less fuzzy sound. If you have a voltmeter, you can test the voltage so you can keep it set where you want it. Put the (+) lead to ground, one of the screw holes on the case will work. Put the (-) lead to the HIGH transitor leg closest to R23 (says VOLT-> on the picture, pointing to the correct leg). About 5 volts is best for cleaner sounds. I would not set it too high, much over 6 or 7 volts. When it is set at 4.5 to 5 volts, it is the same circuit as the original 1968 germanium fuzzface. You may find you need to turn it down (CCW) at higher temperatures, and up (CW) at lower temperatures. This BIAS adjustment allows it to work well at any temperature.

AnalogMan Options:

• Jack Location: Side Jacks
• Add a Power Jack: Boss Style Power Jack
• Transistor Options: Standard Germanium 2N USA

Features:

• True Bypass on both sides
• Two 3PDT stomp switches, one for each side.
